A freshman gymnast stands alone in Haas Pavilion’s dazzling lights. The anxiety increases as I go first in the first rotation of the season’s first meet, almost to the point of being unbearable.
Eventually regaining control, the gymnast gives the instructor one more glance before starting his routine. He receives the first hit of his collegiate career and steps off the mats to find himself mobbed by upperclassmen. They welcomed everyone to Cal.
The biggest collegiate platform will be the setting for senior team leader Yu-Chen (Miles) Lee’s final routine of the 2022 season. He gives his coaches one last fist bump before locking his eyes on the parallel bars. The nerves are creeping up on him — the stadium is too alien and the crowd is too loud for comfort. But Lee tries to block everything out and takes one last deep breath as he prepares to mount.

Lee performed his final parallel bars routine as intended. Even though he fell short of being named an All-American, his effort the day before helped him rack up an impressive seven-for-seven hit rate. He had once again shown that his coaches and teammates can depend on him to hit every routine by finishing the season as one of the few Cal gymnasts to qualify for the NCAA finals.
Sean Shimizu, a freshman, remarked, “Whatever Miles does, he has a wonderful dedication towards it.”
He is unquestionably the role model I most like since he is dependable, organized and an excellent gymnast.
